Oh, boy! Fresh, homemade cinnamon rolls! Here is the link again for the recipe.
Now, I'll let you know what I changed. Really? You didn't think I would change anything?
So, for the dough. I didn't change any of the ingredients, except that I used margarine instead of butter. And, I mixed the entire thing by hand. No mixer. Didn't want to wake the baby, ya know.
For the filling, I used margarine again. But, I didn't melt it first. I had visions of a buttery mess getting all over the counter and not in my jelly-rolled dough. I spread a thin layer of margarine on the dough. (I had to cut the dough in half because it simply would not fit onto the unbelievably small kitchen counter I have.) And, I don't have a rolling pin. So, I used a glass. Yes, a glass. Well, it's round, right?
Then, I just sprinkled sugar and cinnamon on top. No measuring. Just sprinkling until it was completely covered. I'm sure, now that I read the recipe, that I didn't use the same amount of butter, sugar and cinnamon. But, that's okay. Half that stuff would have probably fallen out when I was jelly-rolling. (Yes, that is my new made-up word of the day. How did you know?) Oh, and I didn't add any raisins or walnuts. Raisins were voted out by a family vote. I would have LOVED to have included chopped walnuts. But, that would have involved having to actually make a trip to the grocery store. I have no car and I'm in chilly Chicagoland. Need I say more?
My rolling out of dough with an iced tea glass apparently leaves a lot to be desired because this makes only one 13 x 9" pan of cinnamon rolls once cut. (Or perhaps I cut them too big? Can't tell because, really, have you ever TRIED to cut up jelly-rolled dough? It wants to get all squishy and squirmy and really doesn't cooperate.)
I have done the icing (oh, pardon me.....Creamy Glaze) according to directions again, except for the margarine instead of butter. (Need to add margarine to the grocery list now because I've used almost the entire tub on this one project, even without slathering the melted butter in the middle.)
Now, let me tell you.....this makes a huge mess. Flour everywhere. Flour on the counter. Flour on the cooking utensils sitting in a cup on the counter since there are no drawers to put them in. Flour all over the front of my clothes. Flour all over the floor. Flour all over....well, you get the idea. And, can you imagine if a buttery mess was added to that when I was jelly-rolling?
Do you know the worst part? The worst part has got to be waiting for the dough to rise. Really. Here you are, wanting some yummy cinnamon rolls (knowing full well that you can easily open up a can of them from the refrigerator). And, no, you can't cook them after all this work. You have to sit there and watch them expand. The suspense is dreadful!
Including the awful anticipation of the rising of the dough in two separate sessions, this project has taken a total of 3-1/2 hours. But, oh, the fresh, homemade cinnamon-y goodness.
